Choosing the Path of Life: Reflections on Staying Faithful in a Secular World

Beloved, in today’s first reading from Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8, we encounter Moses standing before the Israelites, urging them to listen to God’s statutes and ordinances. He emphasizes the importance of observing these commands diligently as they prepare to enter the Promised Land. Moses knew that faithfulness to God’s law was not just about obedience; it was about life itself. By following God’s way, the Israelites would set themselves apart from the surrounding nations, becoming a wise and understanding people. Yet, this call to faithfulness was not without its challenges—challenges that are strikingly similar to those we face today.

Just as the Israelites were surrounded by nations with their own gods and ways of life, Christians today live in a world that often promotes values contrary to God’s teachings. The secular culture pulls us in many directions, offering distractions and temptations that can lead us away from a life centered on God. It echoes the words of Joshua from the previous Sunday’s reading, where he confronted the people with a choice: “Choose today whom you will serve” (Joshua 24:15). In the Gospel, Jesus presents a similar challenge to His disciples, asking them if they too would leave Him after many found His teachings hard to accept (John 6:67).

This theme of choice—between the allure of the world and the way of the Lord—is as relevant now as it was then. But how do we make the right choice? How do we stay faithful in a world that often seems to pull us away from God?

The answer lies in two practices that are foundational to our faith: the regular reading of Scripture and prayer. These are not just religious duties; they are lifelines that keep us connected to God’s truth and love. The Bible, often referred to with the acronym B-I-B-L-E, meaning Basic Instruction Before Leaving Earth, serves as our guide. It is more than just a collection of stories or commandments—it is God’s living word, meant to draw us into a deeper relationship with Him. Through Scripture, we hear God’s voice, learn His ways, and find the strength to choose Him daily.

Prayer, on the other hand, is our direct line of communication with God. It is in prayer that we express our deepest desires, our fears, our joys, and our sorrows. It is where we listen for God’s guidance and feel His presence in our lives. As St. Paul exhorts us in Ephesians 6:18, “Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints.” Prayer is not just something we do in the morning or at night; it is an ongoing conversation with God that sustains us throughout the day.

But how do we encourage ourselves—and others—to make Scripture reading and prayer regular habits, especially in a world that often distracts us from these practices?

Start small. Begin with just a few minutes each day, whether it’s reading a passage from the Bible or saying a simple prayer of gratitude. Use technology to your advantage—there are countless apps and resources that can help you engage with Scripture and prayer in a meaningful way. See Scripture as a conversation with God—ask questions, reflect on what you read, and listen for God’s response in your heart. And don’t be afraid to reach out for support. Join a Bible study group or prayer circle, or start one with friends or family members who are also seeking to grow in their faith.

As we strive to stay faithful, it’s important to remember that while we can share and encourage, the ultimate transformation of hearts is the work of the Holy Spirit. This is especially true when it comes to loved ones who have wandered away from the faith. We can plant seeds, but only God can make them grow. Trust in His timing, and continue to pray for them, knowing that God is always at work, even when we cannot see it.

In this ever-changing world, choosing to follow God’s way is not always easy, but it is the path of life. Let us recommit ourselves to regular Scripture reading and prayer, trusting that through these practices, God will guide us, strengthen us, and draw us closer to Him. And let us share these lifelines with others, knowing that our witness can help bring them back to the path of life as well.
