Same Sex Unions – Should I Care
Should I be concerned about the same-sex revolution that seems to be sweeping our world?
Many Catholics and Christians hold the view that if two men or two women choose to get married to each other, then that is their problem. Many believe that they should not or do not need to speak out about it because it is not affecting them and it is not their business. But is this really true? Is it true that if Adam and Steve choose to have a relationship then it is their business and theirs along? The answer is absolutely not! We all should be quite concerned about this!
Looking at it from a Christian standpoint, the bible commands us to be or brother’s keeper. Matthew 18:15 tells us ‘If your brother does something wrong, go and have it out with him alone, between your two selves. If he listens to you, you have won back your brother.‘
This passage is even more detrimental to our salvation. It is taken from the Prophet Ezikiel 3: 17 – 19, and it says, ‘Son of man, I have appointed you as watchman for the House of Israel. When you hear a word from my mouth, warn them from me. If I say to someone wicked, “You will die,” and you do not warn this person; if you do not speak to warn someone wicked to renounce evil and so save his life, it is the wicked person who will die for the guilt, but I shall hold you responsible for that death. If, however, you do warn someone wicked who then fails to renounce wickedness and evil ways, the wicked person will die for the guilt, but you yourself will have saved your life.’
That is serious business! So from a Christian standpoint we cannot take a hands off approach to the ills and the evil of our society. The ‘that is not my business’ approach will not work.
If you choose to leave God and Christianity our of the picture, then there are still very compelling reasons why we should not be silent. It is a known fact that same sex relationship has introduced diseases into our society. These diseases including HIV aids, herpes, gonorrhoea and other sexually transmitted diseases, are impacting on our finances in that the government has the pump money into medication and in seeking cures for these diseases. The funds that is injected into cures and treatments for these diseases are funded from tax payers money. It comes out of your pocket and mine. Not to mention the cost of insurance increases as a direct consequence of the actions of others who choose to either promote or participate in same sex relationship as a ‘right’.
When we remain silent about these issues, they become accepted as the norm. Then the governments and law makers will pass laws to legalize same sex unions. Laws may also be passed that will seek to prevent anyone from speaking out. Then religious liberty and beliefs can pose a problem as they oppose the lay. I hope you’re getting the picture why being silent and indifferent should not be an option.
Our silence can cause the situation to worsen even more. Once same sex unions have been legalized, they can then be taught in schools and included in the school curriculum for all children. My question to you is do you want your child to be taught that same sex unions and the same sex relationship are perfectly fine? Do you want your toddler to be taught in kindergarten school that is perfectly fine to have two parents who are of the same sex? If your answer is no then you cannot be silent about these issues.
Neither must we adopt a mentality of anger and discrimination. I cannot say this often enough. just as being indifferent should not be an option, neither should be acting for all the wrong reasons, or speaking out in ways to belittle or discriminate against others. We must be charitable and compassionate in all that we say and do. We must speak the truth and do so in love genuinely caring for the salvation of the other. Here in Trinidad and Tobago and in much of the Caribbean, we must stay awake as those as those seeking to force these agendas into our beautiful islands are lurking about. Stay awake.
