Encounter God – The Supreme Being

God The Supreme Being

God the Supreme Being.

Today we would like to take a look at God as the Supreme Being. This is not just a topic the Catholics and the Christians, but it touches the core of every human existence.

So who is God? God is the Supreme Being. The word supreme means that he is high above all else, and that there is no other like him all besides him. God is the source of all being and all that exist came from him.

Have you ever seen a truly magnificent sunrise or sunset? Have you ever wondered where this beauty came from? Some may try to explain it in all sorts of scientific terms, maybe gases interacting in the atmosphere etc. But even if that is so the question still begs to be answered; where did the gases come from? No matter how some may try to explain the existence of things outside of God the Supreme Being, it always comes right back to him. Nothing that exist no matter how small, could ever have come into being on its own.

There’s a very beautiful song I believe many of us would know called ‘You are God alone’. In that song, one of the lines says, You are not a God created by human hands. That line actually has its roots in Acts of the Apostles chapter 17 vs 24 – 25, that tells us:-

Since the God who made the world and everything in it himself Lord of Heaven and Earth, he does not make his home in shrines made by human hands. Nor is he in need of anything, that he should be served by human hands; on the contrary, it is he who gives everything, including life and breath to everyone.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us in paragraph 300:

God is infinitely greater than all his works: you have set your glory above the heavens. Indeed, God’s greatness is unsearchable. But because he is the free and sovereign creator, the first cause of all that exists, God is present to His creatures inmost being. In him we live and move and have our being. The words of St. Augustine, God is higher than my highest and more inward then my inmost self.

Who made God?

So that being the case, some me ask who made God? If God had to be made, then he would no longer be God. The being that made him would be God. So God was not made like everything else that we see around us. He always was, and he always will be. Similarly, there is no time when God did not exist. Just as he was not created and always was, so too there is no time that exist when God did not exist.

There is a passage in the Old Testament, the book of Exodus to be more precise, where Moses encountered God and God gave him instructions to go and addresses people. But Moses ask God, ”if I come to the people of Israel and say to them, the God of your fathers has sent me to you, they will ask me what is his name? What shall I say to them then?” And God answered Moses, “I AM WHO AM. This is taken from Exodus chapter 3 vs 13-14.

Are There Other Gods?

One of the very beautiful things about children is the questions that they ask especially when they’re no learning the environment. They will ask you question one after the other, and in many instances would really challenge what we know, or what we thought we knew. They never seem to be satisfied and always want to learn more. I can almost hear them asking the question, so are there other gods?

Because God is the supreme being, there can be only one God. I am a great fan of athletics, and more so the faster races. I have seen it on many occasions where with all the technology that exists now in track and field they were unable to separate two runners and so they were awarded same place in the race.

While this may happen in track and field and in many other competitive arenas that we can think of, this cannot happen with God simply because he is the Supreme Being. The term Supreme Being cannot really be used to describe more than one being. Not only is God the Supreme Being, he is infinitely higher than that he has created. There is just simply none that can compare with God. There never was and you never will be.

So why must there be a God?

There must be a god because nothing can exist without being created. The Sun, the moon, the stars, the plants, the animals, the human race; all had to have had its being somewhere. As mentioned before, even if the scientific approach and answer is taken, you will reach a point where you must admit and recognize that nothing could exist on its own. Many have tried to explain the existence of the universe, Sun the Moon and the stars, by using the Big Bang Theory. Even if that were the case, where did the first atom that started the Big Bang Theory come from? There must therefore be someone who was not made by someone else; someone who never had a beginning, someone who always was. That someone is God.

Just as God always was and always will be, so to there are no limitations to God. He is an infinitely perfect spiritual being without any beginning and without an end. He knows all things and there is no limit to his knowledge. Neither is there a limit to his love. God is love.

Summary

  • Nothing that exists can come into being on its own. They must be created by a Supreme Being. This Supreme Being is God.
  • God has no beginning nor end. God was not made. There never was a time when God wasn’t. He is infinitely higher than any other creature.
  • There is no other god besides Him.
  • God is all powerful, all knowing and is not limited by space.
  • Everything that is created has its being in God.
  • God is Love and Mercy without bounds!

Prayer

Dear God, we believe in you. Thank you God for revealing yourself to us. But Lord, there are those who do not believe in you. Out of your infinite love and your mercy, open their eyes oh Lord and their hearts to the truth about your existence, and come to live in that truth, that you are God alone and besides you, there is non other. Amen!

Homework

Now I know that this is a term that many may not want to hear, but it is meant to help you to grow in the faith. So here are a few questions that you can ponder on. If you wish you can write out your answers, or you can just simply think about it. It would actually be great if you would share your responses in the comments below.  It may help someone.

  • How do I know that God exists?
  • How have you experienced God’s Love?
  • Think of a few events that you have experienced that confirmed to you that there is a God. If you wish you can document this by way of pictures videos etc.
  • If you were to be challenged by someone who does not believe in God about his existence, what will I say to them?
  • Since God is the Supreme Being, what should be my approach to him?
  • How can we get the God adoration and the honor that is due to him?
