What is the forth commandment and what does it mean?
The forth commandment says “Honour your father and your mother.” It is the only commandment that has a promise attached to it, and the promise is “that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God gives you.” The 4th commandment commands us to:
- Love, honour, respect and obey our parents. We must not take them for granted.
- Even in their old age, when they can become a bit of a challenge, we must still love, honor and respect them.
- We must play our part in the home by helping with chores and not leave it all up to our parents.
This commandment also dictates –
- The duties of children towards each other and towards their parent,
- The duties of parents towards each other and towards their children; for example, the primary role of a parent is to lead their children to God
- The responsibilities each of us have towards the wider community
- Respect for those in authority.
