Holy Innocents In Today’s World
Every year, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of the Holy Innocents, and in so doing, we call to mind the male children, two years and younger, who were ordered to be killed by King Herod, because of his insecurity and quest for power. He wanted to be king forever. But on the feast of the Holy Innocents, we remember not only the little baby boys killed at the hands of King Herod, but we also remember those who have been and are being killed at the hands of modern day ‘King Herods’.
This Holy Innocents will be a particularly painful one for many families in Newtown, Connecticut, whose children were killed during a gun attack at an elementary school there. Our hearts, our thoughts and our prayers continue to be with you all. There is the ‘Herod’ that results in the lives of many children being destroyed globally – children who are sold into slavery of every conceivable kind. There is the ‘Herod’ that orders the killing of many many children all over the world, by starvation. This occurs mostly in the poorer countries of the world. The sad thing is while these children die because they have nothing to eat or they don’t have proper medical care, the developed nations of this world spend billions of dollars developing weapons of mass destruction. There is the Herod that destroys the minds, hearts and essentially the lives of children by making it legal for them to be adopted into same-sex unions.
[simpleazon-image align=”right” asin=”0867164875″ locale=”us” height=”330″ src=”http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71bQ6LHfkGL._SL160_.jpg” width=”321″]But while the whole acknowledges most of these modern day ‘Herods’ that continue to destroy our innocent children, and while world felt the pain of Newtown, while the world cried for the twenty innocent children killed, there is an even greater herod in our midst who continues his agenda; a ‘Herod’ that is sanctioned by many powerful world leaders. A Herod that is introduced to many poorer nations as a means to eradicate poverty. A Herod that claims the lives of several thousands of children every day throughout our world. A Herod that fools people into thinking that as long as a ‘child’ is not yet birthed into this world. and is still in its mother’s womb, then it is not really a child, and therefore can be aborted at any time – while in its mother’s womb. While on the one hand, we pass laws legalizing the free reign of this ‘herod’; while on the one hand, we approve of these laws giving ‘herod’ authority to take any unborn ‘child’ he so chooses, we weep and lament over what happened in Newtown, Connecticut. Do we not see that all life is precious?
Interestingly enough, as I am writing this particle part of this article on the feast of the Holy Innocents, the Divine Mercy Rosary started to play. So indeed, we beg God’s Divine Mercy upon us for our folly and for allowing the innocent children that He has temporarily placed in our care to be destroyed.
Eternal Father, as we celebrate the feast of the Holy Innocents, we offer you the Body and the Blood, Soul and Divinity of your dearly Beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ in atonement for our sins of abortion, sins of abuse to our children, sins of not teaching our children Your laws; in atonement for our sins of allowing evil to fall upon our children, and all our many sins, and those of the whole world. For the sake of His sorrowful passion, have mercy of us and through the power of Your Holy Spirit, cause our eyes to be open to Your truth and to your ways, and our hearts to be transformed. In Jesus’ Name we pray. AMEN!
