This is a feast where the Holy Roman Catholic Church focus is on the Eucharist and its importance in the Church and in our lives. In most other places in the world where today is not a public holiday, this feast is simply celebrated by attending Holy Mass, and in other places, the feast of Corpus Christi is celebrated on the following Sunday.
So blessed are we here in Trinidad and Tobago that not only is this very special feast day a public holiday, but as Church, as the Body of Christ, we get to process through the streets of Port of Spain demonstrating – showing off – to all the very root and foundation of our faith, the Holy Eucharist.
What a great privilege it is for us as Catholics to walk through the streets of Port of Spain praying the Rosary, stopping at one point to do benediction; all the while with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, in our midst. As the precession went along, I couldn’t help but notice a couple people who really stood out in the crowd; one was an elderly lady with a cigarette in one hand and a rosary in the other. Not only was she praying the rosary and singing at times, but she journeyed with us for the entire procession. The other person that I couldn’t help but notice was a snow-cone vendor who was plying his trade alongside the truck we were on. He too was praying with the rest of people there.
In keeping with what the Catholic Church teaches on the Eucharist, In keeping with what I know to be true about the most Holy Eucharist, we definitely need the Eucharistic Presence of Jesus Christ to transform our nation and our world. While it will be great to have more Eucharistic processions in our neighborhoods and so called “hot spots”, each one of us – every baptised Catholic – is called to be the “real presence”, the “Eucharistic presence” in our nation, in the so called “hot spots”, in our world.
It is often said and it is a fact, that you become what you eat. If you eat unhealthy, then you will develop health issues. If you eat healthy, then you will most likely enjoy a healthy life. Similarly, if we eat of the Lord and we drink of the Lord truly believing in Jesus’ real presence in the Holy Eucharist, then like the Lord Jesus Christ we shall all be.
