A Love Story Rooted in Faith: The Journey of Hugh and Janet Ramsey

In the heart of San Fernando, two souls were destined to meet and create a love story that would be deeply intertwined with their faith. Hugh Ramsey and Janet Lopez, both born in this vibrant city, had their lives uniquely shaped by their shared journey of faith and devotion.

Hugh Ramsey, born on April 10, 1936, and Janet Lopez, born on January 7, 1944, had more in common than their birthplace. They both moved with their families to Port-of-Spain when they were children, setting the stage for their future encounters.

Before embarking on their lifelong journey together, Hugh and Janet shared a year of courtship. During this time, they experienced the joys and challenges that come with building a deep connection. Their courtship was not only about discovering each other but also about discovering their individual paths in life.

Hugh had a deep desire to discern God’s will for his life. At one point, he contemplated becoming a priest, driven by his unwavering faith and devotion. To find clarity, he turned to the then Archbishop of Port-of-Spain, Count Finbar Ryan, who in turn sought counsel from the then Abbot of Mt St. Benedict, Abbot Adalbert Van Duin.

Abbot Adalbert Van Duin took Hugh under his wing, guiding him through a spiritual journey that involved spending weekends at Mt St. Benedict in prayerful contemplation. This period of discernment was instrumental in helping Hugh understand his calling.

During this time, Hugh was also involved in Legionary work, which led him to Janet’s doorstep. He visited her home to discuss the importance of praying the Rosary, unwittingly setting the stage for a significant turn of events.

As Hugh and Janet crossed paths, an internal conflict began to stir within Hugh. Despite his commitment to a path of priesthood, he found himself increasingly drawn to Janet. The undeniable connection and affection he felt for her left him in a state of confusion.

In an attempt to navigate his feelings, Hugh penned several heartfelt letters to Janet. These letters became a bridge of communication during a pivotal time of discernment, lasting close to a year.

After months of introspection and soul-searching, Hugh reached the realization. It became clear to him that God was calling him not to the priesthood but to the sacred union of marriage. This revelation marked a turning point in their love story, as Hugh and Janet’s shared faith and devotion would guide them on a new path together.

The love story of Hugh and Janet Ramsey is a testament to the power of faith and the divine intervention that can shape our lives. From their roots in San Fernando to their journey of faith-driven courtship, their story exemplifies the beautiful ways in which love and faith intertwine.

Hugh and Janet were married in St. Francis of Assisi, Belmont on 26th October 1963 and have had a wonderful impact on the parish community over the years. Apart from providing for their family, they have always made sure that they have food for the poor – a family ministry that they still do to this day. Their marriage is built on daily praying the Rosary, attending Holy Mass every weekend, and making sure that the sun never sets on their differences. They always made sure that all differences were reconciled before going to bed. Hugh and Janet have seven children and nine grandchildren.

Congratulations to Hugh and Janet Ramsey on their 60th Wedding Anniversary.
