What is the Third Commandment?
The Third Commandment says, “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work; but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work.” To enforce the third commandment, Mark 2: 27 – 28 tells us “The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath; so the Son of Man is Lord even of the sabbath. The sabbath, which represented the completion of the first creation, has been replaced by Sunday which recalls the new creation inaugurated by the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
In remembering the sabbath day and keeping it holy, the third commandment commands that we:-
- Attend Mass on every Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, and that we actively participate in the celebration.
- Acknowledge the “true presence” of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist and receive Holy Communion with respect and reverence.
- Avoid needless work on the sabbath
