We Are Children of God – A Christmas Reflection

As we continue to celebrate the Christmas season, we are reminded of the incredible gift God has given us through His Son, Jesus Christ. The readings for today call us to reflect deeply on this gift: through Jesus, we are no longer strangers or mere creations—we are called children of God.

It began with love so immense that God could not bear to leave us in the darkness of sin. He sent His only Son, not just to live among us, but to take on our burdens, our weaknesses, and our humanity. Jesus, the Lamb of God, came to take away the sin of the world, to make us whole again, and to reconcile us with the Father.

In the First Reading, we hear these profound words: “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are.” (1 John 3:1). This truth changes everything. Because of Jesus, we are not only saved—we are adopted into God’s family. We belong to Him. We are His.

This is the miracle of Christmas: God’s love made flesh, His mercy extended to us, and His invitation to live as His beloved children.

And what does it mean to live as children of God? It means striving to reflect His love, righteousness, and mercy in our lives. It means embracing the joy of knowing we are deeply loved and sharing that joy with others.

Let us also echo the words of John the Baptist in the Gospel today: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). Let us behold Him in the manger, on the cross, and in the glory of His resurrection. And let us give thanks that through His sacrifice, we are made new.

This Christmas, let our hearts be filled with gratitude for this incredible gift. Let us rejoice that we are children of God, born anew through the love of Jesus Christ.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

As we kneel before the manger, we are humbled and awed by the gift of Your Son. In the stillness of that holy night, You sent Jesus into our world—a world burdened by sin and sorrow. He came as the Lamb of God, to take away our sins, to heal our hearts, and to make us Your children.

Father, we thank You for Your immense love, a love that sees us in our brokenness yet calls us to be Yours. Thank You for the gift of Jesus, for His life, His sacrifice, and His victory over death.

Help us to live as Your children, to walk in righteousness, and to share Your love with those around us. Fill our hearts with gratitude and joy this Christmas season, and remind us daily of the miracle of belonging to You.

May our lives proclaim the wonder of the Gospel: that we are children of God, saved by grace, through the Lamb of God.

We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and our King. Amen.
